Disaster areas
Project Wing’s drones are being developed by Google X, a team that has also created the Driverless Car. Google’s intentions are not solely to use the drones to deliver online orders, but to use it in disaster areas. The original idea was to get defibrillators to heart attack victims as drones would be able to move faster than ambulances.
Google has been developing the technology for the past two years and has trialed several times in Australia. Similarly to Amazon’s drones, Project Wing will not be able to carry heavy packages, with the limit currently at 10 kilograms. The drone’s biggest advantage is its design, which allows it to travel much further than the typical quadcopter design Amazon uses.
The drones will not even have to land to deliver packages. It will lower the package with a wire once it has reached its destination, leaving the package safely on the ground. Google wanted to avoid people grabbing the package from the drone and getting injured in the process.
Google has not given a time frame for the actual launch of these drones, saying a lot of time will pass before it is actually feasible.
