No pilot
DHL already started a pilot program in February 2013 to trial drones and it will use a Parcelkopter to deliver medicine and other necessities to German Wadden Island Juist.
It will use a new generation drone that can fly further, longer and is adapted to the weather conditions above the North Sea.
The flight is 12 kilometers long and a special part of the air space is being reserved, allowing the drone to fly fully autonomously, so no pilot will be involved. For safety measures, a ground station will still keep track of the drone. When the drone lands on the island, a DHL employee will pick up the package and bring it to the final location.
The company does not plan on using drones for regular deliveries, but it will consider it in the future.
