HarperCollins-published authors can add a shopping basket or ‘buy now’ button on their website, which will push potential buyers to the publisher’s website. The service is currently only available in the United States, but will move abroad in the upcoming months.
Every book that gets sold through their own website, authors will get an additional 10 % of royalties. That means they get a part of the margin HarperCollins usually has to give other parties, like book stores or Amazon.
HarperCollins is part of Rupert Murdoch’s empire and had indicated that it wanted to focus more on e-commerce in order to give its authors additional paths to reach the consumer.
