Profitable cloud services
Amazon’s third quarter turnover grew strongly, as is always the case in this quarter. Thanks to a 23 % turnover increase, sales reached 25.4 billion dollars (22.9 billion euro), but if the strong dollar is taken out of the equation, turnover would even have increased 30 %. This performance means Amazon beat analysts’ expectations.
Amazon made a 73 million dollar (65.7 million euro) profit on that turnover, while it had to deal with a 437 million dollar (393.3 million euro) loss in the same period last year. Amazon’s cloud services’ excellent performance helped boost the numbers: that division alone raked in a 500 million dollar (450 million euro) profit, quintupling last quarter’s profit and doubling over the same period last year.
Retail sales have also done well, as the number of customers grew 17 % over the last quarter, to 294 million.
