Demand higher wages
Amazon Germany basically has a tradition of strikes during the Christmas holiday, because it had to endure strikes in the two previous Christmas periods as well. Its labour unions want the company to adhere to the wage agreements in the retail industry, but Amazon is having none of that as it refers to the situation in the logistics industry. Those wages are lower, but Amazon feels its employees are part of that industry and not the retail industry.
Christmas is an extremely busy period for Amazon, all across the world and obviously also in Germany where it has 9 distribution centers with more than 11,000 employees. It adds a sizeable number of temporary employees during this holiday season. The company firmly believes its customers will not notice any delay or problems resulting from these strikes, guaranteeing that all deliveries will be made on time.
