One-time digital key
Volvo Cars announced in 2014 it wanted to give e-tailers access to the trunk of a car and that will actually happen starting this week: Alongside PostNord (Scandinavia’s largest communications and logistics supplier), Lekmer.com (Scandinavia’s largest online toy and baby shop) and Mat.se (a Swedish online supermarket), it has launched the very first integrated delivery service, which will bring toys, gifts, food and drinks directly to your car.
Volvo In-Car Delivery will use a one-time digital key that will give the courier access to your car for one single time. The car owner will order something online, pick “In-Car Delivery” as the option and subsequently get a message (be it text message or email) on their smartphone, tablet or pc when the package has been delivered.
“Christmas is fun, but let’s be honest, for most families it is a very busy period. This service will make Christmas shopping a lot more fun”, Björn Annwall (Volvo Senior Vice President Marketing, Sales & Services) said. “Volvo In-Car Delivery offers solid proof that connected car technologies can help save time and make life easier.”
Only in Gothenburg for now
The new service is only available to Volvo owners in Gothenburg and they have to have a Volvo on Call subscription. However, the service will expand to other parts of Sweden and other countries as well. Depending on the deals Volvo can make with other retailers, more deals can be added to this particular service.
Internet giant Amazon also sees a future for car deliveries as it trialed a similar service in the German city of Munich, in collaboration with DHL and Audi.
