Last year, Japanese car manufacturer Toyota managed to sell the largest number of cars worldwide, the fourth year in a row it managed to be the largest brand, despite lower sales compared to the year before.
Drop after scandal
In 2015, Toyota sold 10.15 million cars, a 0.8 percent drop compared to the year before. However, it still managed to keep Volkswagen behind it, as the German car manufacturer only managed to sell 9.9 million cars. That is a 2% drop, for which the blame can be put solely on the cheating software scandal.
When considering the first half of 2015, Volkswagen had taken the lead, but sales dropped extensively once the diesel scandal broke. Not only did its image get hammered, it had to halt the sale of American diesel car entirely.
American General Motors is third in the ranking, selling 9.8 million cars and it is the only car manufacturer in the top three to boost sales compared to 2014, namely by 0.2%.
