Spain’s largest supermarket chain, Mercadona, will gradually modernize its store network, to prepare it for the future. The company has set aside 180 million euro to update 125 of its 1,612 supermarkets next year.
More modern and sustainable
Mercadona’s current store network’s layout dates back to 2000 and therefore could use a fresh new approach. Its employees and consumers were able to give feedback and the result will be a store ready for the future: wider aisles, more natural light to cut energy costs by 40 % and be more environmentally friendly, a new exterior and the addition of modern technologies.
Not only has it been 16 years since the chain updated its customer experience, discounter Lidl’s rapid rise in Spain includes huge investments in new and modern stores, which may partially explain why Mercadona has moved to update its own store network. The website has already undergone a transformation, a sign of things to come in the actual stores?
