French president Macron and the union of French bakers want to get the French baguette listed as Unesco World Heritage. If it succeeds, it will follow in the footsteps of Belgian beer and pizza from Napoli.
Safeguard quality
French baker’s union CNPBF revealed several days ago that it intends to head to Unesco to get recognition for its French. It hopes to become part of the intangible cultural heritage and has asked French president Macron for assistance, which worked. “The entire world is envious about our baguette and with a recognition as World Heritage, we can safeguard the quality and the how-to”, Macron said according to VRT.
France already created a legal framework for baguettes in 1993, for its 33,000 bakeries. Supermarket do not always follow the same guidelines, allowing them to import “counterfeit” from Eastern Europe. According to the bakers’ union, these baguettes do not always meet the required quality regulations.
