E-commerce giant Amazon has opened a second Amazon Go store in Seattle. The new store is slightly smaller than the first one and has a smaller range of products, but works in the same register-less way.
Slightly smaller to accommodate the office lunch
After the much-discussed opening of the first Amazon Go in January, Amazon’s second register-less neighbourhood supermarket is now open. The shop in Seattle, the city where Amazon’s head office is located, measures 135 sqm: slightly smaller than the 167 sqm of the first Amazon Go.
The selection of products in the second store is slightly different, because according to vice president Gianna Puerini, the local population is also different. In the new store, Amazon expects to serve mainly office workers from the surrounding offices, therefore the store is closed at weekends and the focus is on quick snacks and meals, such as the meal boxes Amazon Meal Kits, writes The Seattle Times. Unlike the other Amazon Go, there are no wines, beers or other groceries to be found in this store.
Originally, Amazon was planning to open six Amazon Go stores this year. For the time being though, the company’s lips are sealed when it comes to specific projects. Vacancies have already been spotted in San Francisco and Chicago, so the retailer had to admit they want to open stores there. However, the company does not want to say when.
