Just weeks after the previous record, last Saturday set a new record number of electronic payments in Belgium. For the full year 2019, the milestone of 2.5 billion transactions was exceeded for the first time.
More than 10.5 million transactions
On 21 December, Worldline (the responsible for registering payment transactions in Belgium) registered 10,535,817 electronic payments in physical and online stores, which is a new record. The previous record, which was established on Black Friday, therefore only stood for a few weeks.
Moreover, the mark of 2.5 billion transactions for the current year was passed last Saturday. The previous record holder, the full year 2018, only had 2.3 billion electronic payments, indicating again that electronic payment is becoming increasingly popular – even for smaller expenses. Consumers especially appreciate the safety, speed and ease of use.
Worldline registered a 27.5 % increase in e-commerce transactions this year compared to the same period a year earlier. The number of electronic payments in physical stores increased by 11.5 %, contactless payments even achieved a faster increase and account for more than 12.5 % of purchases with a bancontact card in December. A year ago that was only 5 %.
