Carrefour has acquired Spanish supermarket chain Supersol for 78 million euros. The 172 stores will be rebranded into the French group’s existing store concepts Express, Market or Supeco.
Smaller stores in city centres
Supersol’s 172 supermarkets and convenience stores generated a total turnover of 450 million euros last year. Its current owner, the Lithuanian Maxima Group, has decided to leave the Spanish market. Through the acquisition, Carrefour can strengthen its position as number two within the Spanish supermarket sector.
The stores will now adopt the Carrefour Express, Market or Supeco label, and will also become pick-up points for online orders as almost all of the stores are located in major city centres like Madrid, Malaga, Cádiz or Sevilla). It is expected that the acquisition will be fully completed early next year.
