Kris Engskov, Europe director at Starbucks, announced the news to the Financieele Dagblad, stating that the United Kingdom was better suited, not only because it has the most Starbucks stores, but also because it is an innovative country.
Engskov emphasized the move “had nothing to do with the tax controversy in the United Kingdom”, following a small scandal about Starbucks only paying taxes on its profits in the United Kingdom. That means Starbucks only paid taxes once (in 2007) in the past 15 years, as it operated at a loss in Britain every other year. British media believe these losses were created artificially, with funds being moved to the Netherlands.
