Belgian dairy cooperative Milcobel has taken over cheese packaging company Kaasbrik and, in doing so, strengthens its position in mozzarella – a large and growing market.
Great complementarity
By concentrating more on the production, processing and marketing of mozzarella, Milcobel wants to realise a better milk price for its member dairy farmers. “With the takeover of Kaasbrik, we can further strengthen our position as a significant player on the global mozzarella market. There is a great deal of complementarity between Milcobel and Kaasbrik”, CEO Nils van Dam says. “Mozzarella is a difficult and high-quality product requiring the necessary expertise, and with Kaasbrik, we have found our ideal partner.”
The family-owned company Kaasbrik has around thirty employees, processes a volume of 10,500 tonnes of cheese and achieves a turnover of 40 million euros. The company has a strong market position in the grating of mozzarella and also specialises in grating, packaging and marketing of other hard and semi-hard cheeses such as cheddar or Emmental cheese for the professional market. Kaasbrik has customers in over twenty countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.
Milcobel is taking over the entire Kaasbrik workforce and will retain the site in Halen as a separate production unit. Current CEO Karlien De Turck will also keep her position.
