Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo has grown strongly over the past six months, and is on track to achieve an annual turnover exceeding ten billion euros for the first time in its 100-year history.
Better than market average
In the first half of 2021 (up to 18 July), the revenue of the Dutch supermarket chain increased by 5.3 % to 5.36 billion euros. This means that the company once again performed above the market average, increasing its market share in the Netherlands to 21.8 %. Jumbo expects to maintain this growth in the coming months and to further expand its market share.
Things are also going well online, where sales grew by 50 % compared to the same period last year. Jumbo notes that the stores and the online channel increasingly have a reinforcing effect on each other. The success can also be explained by the continued investments in logistics: the chain now has twelve delivery hubs near major cities and three e-fulfilment centres. The company will open another four hubs before the end of the year.
Ambitions in Belgium remain unchanged
In Belgium, Jumbo now has eleven stores, but expects that number to increase to twenty before the end of the year. “The ambition to grow to 100 outlets in Belgium within a period of 5 years remains unchanged”, the company states in a press release.
The only downside to this story is restaurant chain La Place, which has only been open on a very limited scale due to Covid restriction measures, causing turnover to drop to 13 million euros. To turn the tide, Jumbo has entered into a strategic partnership with catering specialist Vermaat Group, which has taken over the operation of 44 La Place restaurants. The supermarket chain remains the owner of the brand and also retained ten branches.
