French retailer Carrefour will soon launch a paid subscription formula in France, which offers a price reduction on all its own brands. With this, the Europe’s third biggest retailer follows several supermarket chains of the Casino group.
15 % discount
As of 20 September, Carrefour will trial the new service in its 21 stores in the Rouen region, French retail website LSA reports. For a monthly fee of 5.99 euros, customers will receive a 15 % discount on all of the chain’s 7,000 private label products. The offer can also be combined with other offers and loyalty bonuses. Carrefour wants to evaluate the pilot project at the end of this year while having a possible national implementation in 2022 in mind.
Within the food retail sector, subscriptions are becoming increasingly popular: two years ago, Casino launched a formula whereby customers could get a 10 % discount on the entire range for a monthly fee of 10 euros. In the meantime, Monoprix and Leader Price, both part of the Casino group, have launched their own subscription formulas. In Belgium, Delhaize has started a special kind of subscription – in which employers give their employees a “healthy membership”, which translates in a discount on healthy products.
For retailers, the principle of a subscription is an ideal way of rewarding and retaining existing customers and attracting new ones. Apart from that, the system, of course, also generates a fixed income for retailers. Nevertheless, for the time being, Carrefour has no plans to launch a similar subscription service in Belgium, the chain told our editors in response.
