The owners of British supermarket chain Asda, the Issa brothers, are considering expanding the grocer’s convenience store format to service stations across Europe.
Asda on the Move
Specifically, Mohsin and Zuber Issa are thinking of opening their “Asda on the Move” convenience stores at some of EG Group‘s more than 3,000 service stations in continental Europe. An expansion into Europe would be the first international step for the Yorkshire-based supermarket group.
The brothers are also looking to expand the Asda on the Move network within the United Kingdom. By the end of next year, they plan to add 200 stores at service stations, reports Retail Gazette.
EG Group operates Esso and Texaco service stations in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy, among others. An expansion into those regions has been made more difficult by the additional red tape retailers have to deal with since Brexit.
