Carrefour is seizing the start of the Climate Conference in Glasgow to sharpen its own ambitions. The supermarket chain now wants to be carbon neutral by 2040 by reducing CO2 emissions at source in particular.

Last year, Carrefour already set itself new climate targets to limit global warming to less than 2°C by 2100. The plan called for a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030 and a 55% reduction by 2040.
Although the French retailer is ahead of that schedule, it is now tightening up its own climate ambitions again. In doing so, the company is also responding to the expectations of citizens and consumers. “The Carrefour Group is aware that it is seen as a forerunner in the retail sector and has set itself the target of carbon neutrality by 2040”, says the press release.
To achieve the new goal, Carrefour wants to reduce the CO2 emissions of its operations at source as much as possible through various measures. The company wants to use only 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and reduce its own energy consumption by 27.5%. Emissions from the use of refrigerants must be reduced by 80% by 2040. Therefore, Carrefour will replace all cooling units with harmful fluorocarbons by new installations that use CO2.
