Meal delivery company Deliveroo has had an exceptionally strong 2021, even growing in the forth quarter despite the high basis of comparison in 2020.
More, but smaller orders
In the last three months of 2021, Deliveroo’s gross transactional value (GTV) went up by a third to 1.73 billion pounds (2.1 billion euros). While the number of orders went up by 42 %, the average amount for each order went down by 7 %. Full-year GTV even went up by 67 %, to reach 6.63 billion pounds (7.9 billion euros). The slower growth in the fourth quarter was largely due to the exceptional basis of comparison in 2020, as Covid-19 swept through many countries.
In October, Deliveroo ended its Spanish activities as it would have been needing enormous investments to reach a significant market share in the Iberian country. Moreover, Spanish law that came into force this summer states that delivery couriers can not work as freelancer any more. The same issue may also result in the company ending its Belgian activities, should an appeal judge in Brussels squash the initial verdict that went in Deliveroo’s favour.
