Small monthly fee, but strict deadline
Freemarket opened its doors this past weekend in Copenhagen and has a unique business model: customers have to register and then pay 2.5 euro per month in order to get ten new products per month. These items can be picked up at the store, while customers also get coupons and other discounts at other retailers.
The only thing customers have to do is to place a product review online within a particular time frame. If they fail to follow the deadline, their account could be closed and they will lose access to the free products. To re-open their profile, they have to pay a fine, which basically means they have to pay for the product used.
The “tryvertising” formula Freemarket applies has been around for a while, but it is the very first physical supermarket to apply the formula. There have already been several websites that offer products for free in return for a review.
