Action has seen its turnover increase by almost a third in 2022. The non-food discounter has added 280 shops and entered its tenth market, Spain.
2,263 shops
Action opened a record number of new shops last year, ending 2022 with a total of 2,263 shops in ten countries. As a result, sales increased by 30 % to 8.9 billion euros. Action says the increase comes from new shops, higher frequency of visits and a higher purchase amount per visit. However, it does not state how much of the organic growth is in its existing shops. Gross operating profit increased to 1.2 billion euros.
CEO Hajir Hajji says that her company thrives on customers looking for bargains, both for everyday products (such as cleaning and hygiene products), as well as for clothing and DIY items. “Last year, products related to the cost of energy (such as plaids or blankets) were particularly popular”, Hajji pointed out.
Action is also continuing its push to become more sustainable: “We have a long way to go, but we are making great strides. For example, by 2022 we have reduced our own carbon emissions (scope-1 and -2) by 40 %.” By the end of 2023, Action aims to source its cotton sustainably, and all of its wood by 2024. Sustainable or rather cost-effective, Action also boasts that it saved an average of 10 % of energy per square metre of sales area last year.
