“Commercial obligations” and “hectic pace”
On 27 September, during the Paris fashion week, Jean Paul Gaultier will present his last clothing collection.
“After more than 38 years in pret-à-porter production for men and women, it is time to stop certain activities and to focus on developing haute couture, perfumes and several projects I did not have time for until now”, he wrote in a letter. WWD managed to read the letter and the content has already been confirmed by “Maison Jean Paul Gaultier”.
The 62-year old designer also acknowledged he is quitting pret-à-porter because of “the commercial obligations that go along with that” and the “hectic pace of having to make one collection after another, leaving no room for innovation”. The decision was said to be “in agreement with the main shareholder”, Spanish Puig, and will force some 10 people out of a job.
