Meal-worm spread
The new products are a collaboration between Delhaize and “the green kow company”, a Belgian enterprise specialized in food development based on insects.
The product range contains two meal-worm spreads, but it will also have other items. Delhaize claims to be the first Belgian chain to offer these items on sale. One jar of spread costs 3.45 euro.
“Need a new thought process”
Food manufacturer Damhert has also developed meat replacements based on worms, called Insecta. No meal-worms, but Buffalo beetle larvae as they can be digested more easily apparently. The larvae are turned into nuggets, schnitzels and hamburgers and will presented at the Biolicious convention in Ghent on 21 September. From 1 October, they will be available in several supermarkets.
Damhert says that insect-based food is the future, but that these animals have a negative image and that is why the consumer has to develop a new thought process. Putting insects in recognizable products has to help form that thought process.
