Belgian organic supermarket chain Bio-Planet, part of the Colruyt Group, plans to open its first store in Luxembourg next year. After a difficult year, the retailer sees organic sales picking up again.
Positive turnaround
Bio-Planet currently has 33 stores in Belgium, with the latest opening on 29 March in Tournai. Before the end of this financial year, the retailer will also open stores in Hannut and Londerzeel. Moreover, the chain will cross the border next yearand open its first store in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, where the share of organic purchases is twice as high as in Belgium, managing director Jan Van Holsbeke revealed in an exclusive interview with RetailDetail.
The organic supermarket chain saw volumes fall by 10 % last year due to the energy crisis and inflation, but has noticed a positive turnaround since the beginning of the year. The organic market is reviving, after declining across Europe during the past few crises. “In the long term, conscious consumption is definitely on an upward trend, slowly but surely”, the managing director thinks.
