Ahold Delhaize has sold its American grocery delivery service FreshDirect to Turkish Getir. The supermarket group wants to focus on its omnichannel model, which combines online with physical stores.
“Difficult decision”
FreshDirect delivers fresh groceries to homes in and around New York, in line with Getir’s core activities. It had been in Ahold Delhaize’s possession since November 2020.
JJ Fleeman, CEO of Ahold Delhaize USA, said the sale was “a difficult decision” but “our strength as a grocery retailer in the US is the true omnichannel experience – a combination of online and in-store. With this decision, we will increase our focus on omnichannel – our biggest growth opportunity.”
With the acquisition, Getir is strengthening its presence in the US. The service already operates in major American cities such as New York, Boston and Chicago. In Europe, the company recently significantly scaled back its operations.
