Fruit and vegetables that do not meet certain ‘cosmetic’ standards, like crooked cucumbers, are usually not found in the supermarket. An increasing number of customers nowadays rather bothered by price than by the appearance and that is why Albert Heijn has now decided to start selling them.
From Wednesday 17 December onward, the chain will sell packages on its website – filled with so-called ‘ugly’ fruit and vegetables – for about 75 % of the regular price. Soon, it will also sell these packages in the physical stores, but it won’t sell the items separately.
Up until now, these products were sold to other companies, which then turned them into juice, soup or animal feed. Other Dutch chains, like EkoPlaza and Jumbo, have sold ugly fruit and vegetables for discounted prices for a while now.
