297 million dollars
Several clients had filed a complaint against Ahold and US Foodservice – which is called US Foods nowadays. The former subsidiary used to overcharge its clients (mainly hotels, hospitals and restaurants) between 1998 and 2005.
Those prices mean US Foodservice may have violated its client agreements and several corruption and extortion laws, which is why it has now settled for 297 million dollars (250 million euro).
Ahold already sold US Foodservice in 2007 and this isn’t the first time the company has been implicated in malpractices. It had previously been part of an accounting scandal, after it turned out it had considerably embellished its financial numbers.
