30 % reduction in staff
Sony’s onerous smartphone division faces another round of redundancies: according to press agency Reuters’s Tokyo sources, another 1,000 people will be fired – although a company spokesperson refused to comment.
These cuts will be on top of the previously-announced 1,000 jobs cut. In the end, the division will employ some 5,000 people, which is a 30 % reduction in staff. According to business paper Nikkei, China, Great Britain and Sweden face the bulk of the reduction. Sony is expected to officially announce the redundancies when it presents its quarterly results on 4 February.
