In the first half of 2024, Belgian online shops recorded 5% more online transactions and turnover. Practically every Belgian now buys online. Which products are bought the most – and which sectors are lagging behind?
Webshops continue to grow
With both an increase in turnover and transactions (both +5%) compared to last year, the popularity of e-commerce in Belgium clearly continues to grow. This is according to a new report by sector federation Becom, which charts the e-commerce market in the first half of this year. Never have so many people bought anything online as in the first six months of 2024: almost every adult Belgian is now an online consumer.
The number of Belgian online shops remained more or less stable at 63,867, but they record a clear increase in turnover. The smallest webshops – the micro segment – are decreasing in number and growing into a slightly higher segment. Small webshops are growing to the medium level. ‘This is a positive evolution because small and medium webshops account for 61% of the total number of transactions,’ says Becom director Greet Dekocker.
