On Thursday 7 November, the last of Delhaize‘s 128 franchised stores reopens its doors: it is the completely remodelled branch at Plantin and Moretuslei in Antwerp.
Increasing market share
With the reopening in Antwerp, Delhaize completes the privatisation of 128 branches, more than a year and a half after announcing its future plan and one year after the reopening of the first privatised store, in Denderleeuw. ‘The reopening of the last self-managed shop is an important moment for Delhaize. After an intensive transition period, we are now seeing the first positive results. For us, this is clear evidence that we have taken the right decision,’ says Xavier Piesvaux, CEO of Delhaize.
Delhaize points to the first promising results: market share is rising, the franchised stores are achieving better results, suppliers see opportunities to develop more tailored commercial initiatives. Thanks to adjusted opening hours – especially on Sundays – and additional local assortments, customers are better served. The existing independent store base is also doing well, says the retailer.
