The ranking of the largest European food retailers is topped by three German groups. Schwarz Gruppe (Lidl‘s parent company) is further increasing its lead.
German dominance
The Schwarz group is now single-handedly achieving as much turnover as the European numbers two and three combined, namely Rewe and Aldi (Nord and Süd combined). The four largest German supermarket groups – including Edeka in addition to the three chains mentioned above – account for European sales of 445 billion euros.
Adding up the turnovers of the six largest French food retailers (Carrefour, E.Leclerc, ITM, Auchan, Coopérative U and Casino) only results in half as much (248 billion euros), while the four largest British food retailers (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons) do not get past 160 billion euros.
