Responsible tomato harvest
Cultivators, workers and store companies combine their efforts in the Fair Food Program to enforce decent wages and acceptable working conditions for the employees. Other major companies like McDonald’s, Burger King and Walmart had already joined the FFP.
Ahold USA’s primary focus will be on the tomato industry in Florida, as it is the state that produces 90 % of all tomatoes in the United States in the November – May period. Together with the FFP, Ahold USA wants to make sure the tomato cultivation is done responsibly.
Ahold’s American branch has 4 chains (Stop & Shop New England, Stop & Shop New York Metro, Giant Landover and Giant Carlisle) that have nearly 780 supermarkets combined, a number that will most likely increase once the merger with Belgian Delhaize is finalized.
