C&A‘s trial of smaller city stores has proven unsuccessful: the fashion retailer is closing its two Amsterdam locations after less than a year.
“Geen duurzame toekomst”
In March last year, C&A opened two compact city stores in the centre of Amsterdam. With a retail space of just 300 sqm, they were significantly smaller than an average branch of the fashion chain. The new concept aimed to bring inspiration, shopping experience and more personal customer contacts to women in particular.
At the time, the retailer stated that the city stores played an important role in its growth ambitions: of the more than one hundred planned stores over three years, a large number were to be city stores. However, the company is now retracting those ambitions: “After a thorough evaluation, we have had to conclude that these two stores in this format have no sustainable future”, a spokesperson told RetailTrends. The store on Kinkerstraat will close on 8 February, the one on Ferdinand Bolstraat a week later.
