In H&M‘s new Sustainability Report, the Swedish chain said it continues to advance when it comes to sustainability. 78 % of the company’s electricity already comes from renewable sources, three times as much as in 2014.
Only sustainable cotton by 2020
H&M’s total emissions also dropped 56 % over the past year, with the company working diligently to create ever more sustainable clothing. It managed to gather 12,000 tons of textile in its stores, which was then used to create new clothing. About 20 % of H&M’s own textile was manufactured in a sustainable fashion, while it only reached 14 % in 2014.
31.4 % of cotton was organically made, recycled or carried a Better Cotton Initiative label, but H&M hopes to reach 100 % sustainable cotton by 2020.
The Swedish fashion company points to the deals it made with Swiss IndustriALL Global Union and the Swedish labour union FI Metall, to keep the dialog going about honest wages for people at the company’s suppliers.
