The American branch of animal rights organization PETA has recently become one of Prada‘s most remarkable shareholders. This means it is now able to attend the company’s annual general assembly of shareholders.
“No more ostrich policy”
The American branch of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has become one of Prada’s shareholders, according to a statement from its Dutch division. The move spells bad news for the listed luxury brand as PETA has turned up the heat on ostrich leather, specifically targeting Prada for the electrocution of one-year old ostriches. Afterwards, these animals get their throats cut in order to create luxurious handbags with ostrich leather.
“Every bumpy Prada bag represents a sensitive young ostrich hung upside down, killed and plucked in a miserable and frightening slaughterhouse”, PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk said. “PETA US will bring the fight against cruelty straight to Prada’s board room and will the company to cease the production of hand bags made from ostrich leather.”
