Car sales in the European Union have grown 16 % in May compared to a year earlier. Over the first five months of 2016, European car sales grew almost 10 %. Belgium performed even better, with a 20 % growth.
Volkswagen is still the largest
Every major car market managed double-digit growth, except for the United Kingdom, which only grew 2.5 %. Dutch car sales grew 4.8 % while Belgium experienced a huge increase, up 20.6 %. Greece was top of the class, with a near 50 % increase compared to the year before. In absolute numbers, Germany is still the largest market, with 287,000 new cars.
Volkswagen is still Europe’s largest brand, with 143,303 car sold in May. The entire Volkswagen group, including Skoda, Seat, Audi and Porsche, took a 24 % market share, which gives it first place. However, last year it managed a 25.5 % market share, which clearly shows it is still facing the fallout from Dieselgate. Renault is Europe’s second largest car group, with a 10.6 % market share. PSA is a very close third.
