According to market researcher Canalys, 35 million tablets were sold in the past quarter, down 16 % compared to a year ago, but Apple did manage to increase its market share.
Drop for Android
Tablet sales dropped to their lowest point in three years. When the iPad was introduced in 2010, sales surged tremendously, but there has been a steady decline since 2013.
Particularly the Android tablets are not doing well, although Samsung – which only sells Android devices – is still the market’s number two, with a 16 % market share. However, Apple currently controls 28 % of the market.
Canalys analysts feel tablet manufacturers should focus entirely on the business market. Tablets with detachable keyboards, like Microsoft’s Surface or the iPad Pro, are performing well, but Canalys does not expect this slice of the market to boost the overall market back to previous heights, but it is an opportunity nonetheless.
