Consumers in The Hague can order vegetables from the roof soon, harvested from Urban Farmers‘ urban farm in Hofstad.
Order and pick up fresh food
The Fresh Weekly Baskets, filled with fruit, vegetables and fresh fish can be ordered online and picked up from one of the pick-up points in The Hague. Urban Farmers only services local restaurants and catering companies up until now.
Urban Farmers’ urban farm is located on the roof of the former Philips building, De Schilde. The greenhouse on the roof has been operational for three months and should help produce 60 tons of sustainably-grown fruit and vegetables every year. Its breeding tanks on the sixth floor should produce another 20 tons of tilapia fish.
The farm also has room to process and package the products, while people can get a tour of the facilities and it even has enough room to stage events.
Largest commercial urban farm in Europe
Urban Farmers, founded by Roman Gaus, ventured into The Hague last May. Located on the roof of De Schilde, its 1,900 sqm surface propels it to the position of Europe’s largest commercial urban farm, the company says. The goal is to launch urban farms in other Dutch cities as well.
The organization has similar farms in Basel, Zurich and Berlin. In the United States, it is also involved in urban farm projects on the East Coast.
