For first time more smartphones
Samsung remains the undisputed market leader in smartphone land: the Koreans sold 70.7 million phones in the first quarter;
60.7% more than in the same period of last year. Perhaps surprisingly, Samsung sells more than
the numbers two to five combined (Apple, LG, Huawei and ZTE) – and that is even before
the launch of the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S4.
Apple only manages to sell half as much with 37.4 million
units (+6.6%), but keeps its lead on number three, LG (10.3 million units,
+110%). Spots number four and five go to the Chinese: Huawei sold 9.9 million
smartphones (+94.1%), rival ZTE 9.1 million (+49.2%).
Nokia keeps dropping down the ranks: the Fins
sold a quarter less units than a year ago (61.9 million). The untouchable
market leader keeps running away easily (115 million units, including normal
mobiles: +22.9%).
Tablets weigh on pc sales
Earlier in April IDC announced “the biggest
drop in pc sales ever”. In the past quarter 76.3 million pc’s were sold, 13.9%
less than in the first quarter of 2012. IDC says this decline is because of the
ever growing popularity of tablets and smartphones and the disappointing
results of Windows 8 (normally a new release gives sales a boost).
The top three in sales remained unchanged: HP
is still number one, despite a loss of -23.7% in sales, Lenovo fortifies its
second place with a status quo, while Dell stays at number three (-10.9%).
