Pioneer in
resonance boxes
Bose
studied sound and electrical engineering at the famed Massachusetts Institute
of Technology (MIT) in Boston. After working at Philips in Eindhoven, he
returned to the institute. He started working as a researcher and professor of
acoustics in 1956. Although he only intended on staying on for two years, he
would eventually work at MIT until 2001.
In the
meantime he founded his company in 1964, together with Sherwin Greenblatt. It
became the pioneer in small resonance boxes that could produce a rich sound.
Today the company has 3,900 employees.
Innovation
and not profit as goal
Bose always
had a close connection with MIT, even after his retirement. In 2011 he even donated most of his shares of the company to the institute. The money they
generate is being used for financing research and education.
MIT can also
never sell the company. It also has no say in the policies of Bose or the way
it is run. Bose never made making a profit one of his priorities. He said he
only wanted to give the world something new.
