Technology company Apple and furniture store chain Ikea are collaborating on augmented reality that should be revealed in the fall. The app should give customers the opportunity to see how their purchase fits their own interior.
New collections first in the app
Apple and Ikea are highly ambitious, because they say this will become the world’s largest AR app. “This will be the first augmented reality app that will enable you to make buying decisions”, leader of digital transformation at IKEA Systems, Michael Valsgaard, said.
It will not yet be possible to buy through the app, but Valsgaard did say the app will have that functionality later on. “Ideally, you could put a sofa in your home with the help of the app, and then with one click add it in the shopping cart on the e-commerce site.”
The app will be released later in the year and will have 500 to 600 products. It will also be pivotal to future product launches, which will appear in the app first.
Ikea already added augmented reality to its catalog in 2014, which also allowed customers to place virtual products in their home, but Valsgaard says this new app will take things to the next level, mainly thanks to Apple’s expertise.
