Swedish H&M has acquired a minority stake in Re:newcell, which targets the recycling of old clothing in order to ensure a more sustainable fashion industry.
“Closed the loop”
Re:newcell’s technology can turn old clothing into a new organically degradable material, which the textile industry can use as a fiber. “This is the link that has been missing from the production cycle. Re:newcell has closed the loop”, a proud CEO Mattias Jonsson said. “The way fashion is produced and consumed can hopefully be transformed into a never-ending loop in the future.”
Re:newcell processes old clothing and the textile industry’s leftovers in Kristinehamn (Sweden). This should help lower the amount of textile waste. The use of chemicals and water within that particular factory is completely sustainable and it manufacturers 7,000 tons of Re:newcell pulp every year. It will build additional manufacturing plants in the near future.
