During Thanksgiving weekend in the United States, which contains Black Friday and Cyber Monday, there was a big surge in mobile sales. Those two days saw a total sales figure of almost twelve billion dollar (just shy of ten billion euro).
Smartphones still on the way up
Cyber Monday set an overall online shopping record for the United States, with sales reaching a total of 6.59 billion dollars (5.6 billion euro). On Black Friday total online sales were a bit lower at 5.03 billion dollars (4.3 billion euro).
The entire shopping weekend showed that about half of online shoppers visited shops via their smartphones, while about a third of the revenue came through mobile devices. Revenue on mobile devices shot up 40% and outperformed the rest of the market, which saw an increase between 10 and 20%. “Shopping and buying on smartphones is becoming the new norm and can be attributed to continued optimizations in the retail experience on mobile devices and platforms,” Adobe’s marketing vice president Mickey Mericle said. However, the average checkout sum on smartphones is still considerably lower than that on computers.
One of the winners of the continued shift to online shopping is Amazon, that sold millions of Fire Tablets and had the Echo Dot as the number one selling product on Amazon globally. “Customers purchased millions of Amazon’s Alexa-enabled devices this weekend, and Alexa devices were the top sellers across all of Amazon,” its devices vice president Dave Limp concluded.
