Swedish Ikea will now also manufacture vegan products. The first item will be the Veggie Dog, a vegan version of the hot dog. Local customers will have to wait until the summer to buy one here as well.
“Good for people and the planet”
Ikea is still examining whether its additives will also be vegan, on top of the vegan basic igredients. Only then does it want to talk about a vegan hot dog itself. “But we are working on that right now”, Ikea said, according to De Standaard.
Customers of the Ikea store in Malmö, Sweden, are the first to try such a hot dog, because it will launch it there at the end of the month. Starting August 2018, it will also sell the hot dog in other European stores. “About 660 million people enjoy Ikea’s food every year and we want to take up our responsibility, serving food that is good for people and good for the planet”, Ikea explained its choice for the new hot dog.
It is not the first time the chain has considered vegetarian and vegan options: it launched a vegetarian version of its Swedish meatball dish several years ago. In the meantime, more than 10 % of its meat balls sold are of the vegetarian kind.
