Albert Heijn has announced a fifth distribution centre for online orders. Home delivery is quickly becoming more popular at ah.nl, and so the new centre will constructed in Amsterdam, creating about 1000 jobs.
Shift towards home delivery
Albert Heijn has noticed strong growth in e-commerce, particularly in groceries delivered at home. That’s why the supermarket chain is renewing its e-commerce services. This includes the rollout of a delivery bundle in collaboration with bol.com as well as the closure of a number of pickup points, as outside of urban areas, there is a clear shift towards home delivery.
Home delivery requires a different sort of logistics, which is why Albert Heijn is investing in a fifth distribution centre (or Home Shop Center, as they call it) in Amsterdam. The logistical hub will bring in about 1000 new employees and process about 40,000 orders per week. The distribution centre will also host Albert Heijn’s entire range of products.
AH currently has distribution centres in Almere, Eindhoven, Rotterdam and the Meern. More hubs will be added in urban fringe areas. The deliveries will be made by cars coming from these hubs.
