Dutch chains HEMA and Albert Heijn have announced the first locations where they will test a combined store concept. This autumn, Rotterdam and Utrecht will see the first stores in which both chains share the floor.
Utrecht and Rotterdam
Three months ago, both chains announced concrete plans for combined stores, where customers can buy items they need from both stores at the same time, but exact locations were not yet revealed. Now, both chains did exactly that, pointing to Utrecht (Oudegracht) and Rotterdam (Beursplein) as the first places where the test would be carried out.
The test will be held in Hema stores that will feature a full Albert Heijn product offering, including fresh and non-perishable items. Customers can check-out at self-scan zones from both chains. For Hema, the collaboration fits in its new strategy that features more partnerships with other retailers and more investments in the Netherlands. For the Ahold Delhaize subsidiary, the stores are a further step in developing convenience stores and foodservice solutions in central locations.
