Aldi trials till-less store in the UK

Food20 September, 2021

More and more large retailers are experimenting with till-less stores. Discounter Aldi is also trialling a concept in the United Kingdom whereby customers can leave the supermarket without going through checkout.

App

Upon entering the store, customers must scan an app. They can then continue shopping as usual. After leaving the store, they receive their receipt via e-mail, and the checkout is fully automated using the customer’s chosen payment method.

Currently, the retailer’s staff are testing the till-less store. Later, more trials with real customers will follow, writes Charged Retail.

Invaluable information

“We are always looking to redefine what it means to be a discount retailer, and the technology involved in this trial will give us a wealth of learnings”, explained Giles Hurley, head of Aldi in the UK and Ireland.

Aldi follows the trend set by Amazon Fresh, which opened its sixth till-less store in Dalston, and Tesco, which has also been trialling similar technology.

The pilot comes as no real surprise. In the spring of this year, the British press already speculated about a checkout-free Aldi store after the retailer applied for a trademark registration for a “Shop&Go” format.
