Belgian Dirk Van den Berghe, Delhaize Belgium‘s former CEO, has been appointed Walmart Asia’s regional chairman and Walmart China’s CEO.
China is a priority
From 22 August onward, Van den Berghe will lead Walmart’s Asian operations and also take direct control over its Chinese division. That is a huge promotion, as China is Walmart’s absolute priority, while Japan is also very important to the retailer. The manager will move to Hong Kong and spend most of his time in China and Japan.
Currently, he is still CEO of Walmart Canada, a division that has present beautiful results over the years.
Dirk Van den Berghe’s promotion is not the only shift at the top of Walmart: Asda CEO Andy Clarke announced his retirement in the United Kingdom, with current Walmart China CEO, Sean Clarke, ready to replace him.
