Ikea builds sustainable store in Copenhagen

A public rooftop garden, 250 trees, 1,450 sq m of solar panels and parking spaces for over 760 bicycles: these are the most striking features of the new, innovative Ikea city store opening in 2023 in the centre of Copenhagen.

Tailored to the city and its residents

As increasingly more people are living in cities, Ikea follows their lead. In 2023, the retailer will open a new city store in Copenhagen, which will respond to the Danish capital’s infrastructure and green vision of the future, both in terms of its concept and its architectural approach.

Almost half of the city’s inhabitants commute to work by bicycle, and only a third have a car at their disposal. Therefore, the new city store will have a big bike shed with accomodation for more than 760 bicycles and will offer same-day delivery. Customers will only be able to take smaller items home immediately.

According to Jette Jørgensen, group expansion manager at Ingka Group, the city store will not only function as a retail space but also function as a meeting hub for locals. Architecture plays a supporting role in this regard. “Locals can also have a cup of coffee there, hang out on the rooftop or meet up with friends for dinner,” they say.

Sustainable design

The city store will be a stone’s throw from the nearest train station, the Meatpacking district and the inner-city harbour. In addition to its unique location, the Ikea store will also include a restaurant, café and a publicly accessible rooftop garden. The roof will also serve as a footbridge connecting the southern part of the city with the city centre.

Ikea wants to be a circular company by 2030, and the new building fits into that ambition. The city store will aim for ‘BREEAM outstanding’ certification, making the construction phase and daily energy use as sustainable as possible. To achieve this, 250 trees and bushes will be planted and 25 per cent of the building’s façade will be covered in greenery. In addition, 1,450 sq m of solar panels will be installed.
