Google wants to invest a lot in OLED screen production at LG

Google intends to invest 1 billion won (830 million euro) in technology firm LG’s OLED screen production. These are used in smartphones, but are often in short supply.

Apparently, the investment will mainly focus on the new flexible OLED screens, which it intends to use for its Pixel smartphone range. Samsung already uses these screens and Apple will most likely use Samsung’s screens in its newest iPhones.

 

Google wants to avoid possible shortages, which is why it is willing to invest heavily in LG, allowing the latter to increase its production capabilities. Previously, Google used Samsung’s screens, but wants to switch to a new supplier even though it will have to invest a lot of money to do so. The new Google Pixel 2, to launch in the fall and produced by HTC, will have an LG screen.

 

LG has allegedly not yet agreed to Google’s terms and is also not willing to respond to the rumours.
